Johann Jacob von SANDRART (Regensburg 1655 - Nuremberg 1698) "Nilus" Original etching by a drawing by Johachim von Sandrart from the collection entitled "Der Teutsche Academie" or "The German Academy of Architecture, Sculpture & Painting" published in Nuremberg in 1675-79. Beautiful specimen printed on laid paper, with good margins beyond the imprint of the slab and in excellent general condition. Johachim von Sandrart, painter, engraver and art history scholar, also had Aegidius Sadeler among his teachers during a youthful stay in Prague. Driven by various family and professional events, he traveled extensively through Europe making himself appreciated by the Sovereigns and High Prelates who commissioned him numerous works; in London he met Charles I and during the years of his important Roman stay he was employed by Cardinal Barberini and Prince Giustiniani. On his return to Germany he retired to Nuremberg where he founded an academy and published various works of art history resulting from a life of passionate scholar and collector.
